We began our Smarter Balanced testing this week. So far, the students have completed their first test! They are working very hard and doing a nice job on the computers. Honestly, I think we as teachers were more worried than they were. I was scared the technology might give us some issues we had not previously had to deal with. Although, we have had a few small issues, we have done very well!

Today we ventured to the Journey Museum to learn about the history of the Black Hills and the pioneers that came to the area. Meet Miss Kjose our student teacher this semester. She will be in our room until May as she finishes her teaching degree. We have had the pleasure of having our superintendent of Rapid City Area Schools come into our classroom to teach Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement gives students the opportunity to learn about how businesses run and the chance to dream about what their future may hold. Local business people volunteer to work with a classroom, and we feel very lucky to have our own Dr. Mitchell working with us!
The questions was posed...How do we get the egg in the glass of water without touching the pan with our hands? The students then worked on some smaller trials to see if they could use what they learn from those experience and apply it to the egg drop. One was a plastic cup with a note card lying on top and a pen above the note card, how do you get the penny in the cup without touching the note card with your hands?
Then they had a pile of four nickels. They had to get the bottom nickel out with out touching any of the top nickels and without knocking all the others over, keeping them in their pile. Each of the students had a flat, dull plastic knife as a tool to assist them with these two tasks. Today we learned about force, we looked at how gravity constantly pulls towards Earth. An object at rest stays at rest was evident, and a force is any push or pull on an object. In order to discover this we performed the following egg drop. This week during team time we worked on the pattern for Anna Kendrick's song Cups. I had learned it years ago to a different pattern: Clap, clap, bumblebee Clap, up, down Clap, turn, touch, touch Change, pat, down We were then working on staying together so we can pass the cup at the end. Check it out! For the past two weeks we have been studying ways to collect data, put the data on a line plot and find mode, median, range, outliers, and identify information from line plots. The photos are of students working on their own data projects. They chose a survey question to research within the classroom. The data they collected was organized into line plot graphs, and from that data they were able to draw conclusions to their survey question.
