Every student in our class has a writer's notebook. This notebook is very important as it is used as a place to collect ideas and thoughts for the future stories we will write in class. The chart to the right shows some of the different types of entries we have learned about and that students are familiar with using. It is their responsibility to complete three entries a week of their choosing so that their ideas are readily available throughout the year.
These notebooks become a very special place for the students, it is almost like their own secret world that only they can go into.
The ideas for these entries come from Aimee Buckner's book, Notebook Know-How, which is an excellent tool to use to start writer's notebooks in the classroom. I have found it very useful for a number of things!
